Q. My 9 year old white and grey shih-tzu has redish-brown stains around his mouth and some of his nails. I can see them clearly because they are staining his white hairs. He also has tear stains of the same colour. He has never had tear stains before and whatever is the cause seems to be staining his mouth and the hair around some of his nails. He is not eating anything or doing anything different that I know of. It just suddenly appeared one day about a week ago. What could it be?

A. He chews them. It is from his saliva. Its just like tearstains. Long version: First, take him to the vet to make sure he does not have red yeast or a bacterial infection. (they will give you a script for this and you will see results in like two days!) If neither, get him groomed really well. If you cannot afford to do this right now, start off with face washing at least three times a day. WARM water soaks... then dry with a towel. really dry as wet promotes the stains. Use bottled water or filtered water because some tap water has minerals in it that will help tearstains worsen. ALSO, your food. I feed solid gold as it has no additives and I know the dyes won't be coming out in their fur. (plus they have delicate skin so it keeps… [cont.]
